How we grade
Almost everything we sell is one of a kind: overstock, returns and liquidation finds that we open, test and grade by hand. Every listing carries a star rating and a condition label; store listings also carry a grade and an inspection sheet. Here is exactly what they mean.
The stars
One number for the whole item — the same scale on every listing, every Cyber Monday deal and every auction lot. Platinum stars mean factory sealed; gold stars mean we opened it. The rule: start from the label, then one star off for grade B and two for grade C.
Condition labels
The label says what state the item is in. The listing says what we found on this one.
Grades
When we test an item we also give it a grade, so you can compare two of the same kind at a glance.
- A+
- indistinguishable from new
- A
- works perfectly; at most a faint mark you have to look for
- B
- works perfectly; light cosmetic wear you can see
- C
- works; obvious wear — the listing says where
The inspection sheet
Store listings carry an inspection sheet under Condition report on the product page: what is in the box, what we tested and found working, the condition we gave it and the date we inspected it.
Cyber Monday deals and auction lots go up faster: we open and check each one and rate it with stars and a condition label, without a sheet. An item that moves from the store into Cyber Monday or an auction keeps the sheet it already has.
